Você escreve um e-mail em inglês e todas as frases começam com "and". Ou fala de uma viagem e cada ideia vem colada com "but". O inglês está certo, mas parece uma lista, não um texto. A pessoa entende, e mesmo assim você sente que soa básico. Tenho alunas intermediárias que empacam justamente aqui: sabem as palavras, não sabem ligar as ideias.
Conectivo, ou linking word, é a cola das frases. São palavras pequenas que dizem se a ideia seguinte soma, contrasta, explica, conclui. Neste post eu trago 60 delas, em seis tabelas por função, com tradução e exemplo. Não é pra usar todas; é pra ter opção além de "and" e "but". Bora lá?
Como o conectivo muda a frase
Repara na diferença entre estas duas versões da mesma ideia:
"I studied a lot. I didn't pass." Estudei muito. Não passei.
"Although I studied a lot, I didn't pass." Embora eu tenha estudado muito, não passei.
A segunda tem uma palavra a mais e a relação entre as ideias ficou clara. É isso que o conectivo faz.
Dica: um conectivo por frase, no máximo. Texto bom não é o que tem mais "however" e "moreover"; é o que usa a palavra certa no lugar certo.
Adição: somar ideias

Contraste: opor ideias

"The hotel was far from the center. However, it was very quiet." O hotel era longe do centro. No entanto, era muito silencioso.
"Despite the long flight, I wasn't tired." Apesar do voo longo, eu não estava cansada.
Dica: depois de "despite" e "in spite of" vem substantivo ou verbo com -ing, nunca frase inteira: "despite the rain", "despite being late". Pra frase inteira, usa "although": "although it rained".
Causa e consequência

"I missed the bus, so I was late for work." Perdi o ônibus, então me atrasei pro trabalho.
Repara que "because" vem com frase inteira e "because of" vem com substantivo. "Because it rained" e "because of the rain". A mesma lógica de "although" e "despite".
Escrever bem em inglês não é ter vocabulário difícil. É deixar claro como uma ideia se liga à outra.
Tempo e sequência

"First, we checked in. Then we had dinner. After that, we went for a walk." Primeiro, fizemos o check-in. Depois, jantamos. Depois disso, fomos dar uma volta.
Exemplo, ênfase e esclarecimento

"I like big cities, such as New York and Chicago." Gosto de cidades grandes, como Nova York e Chicago.
"Actually, the beach was better than the pool." Na verdade, a praia foi melhor que a piscina.
Dica: "actually" não é "atualmente". É "na verdade". Pra dizer atualmente, usa "currently" ou "nowadays". Esse é um dos falsos cognatos que mais enganam.
Conclusão, opinião e condição

O padrão por trás dos 60
Todo conectivo responde a uma pergunta: a ideia seguinte soma (and, also, in addition), contrasta (but, however, although), explica a causa (because, so, therefore), organiza no tempo (first, then, finally), dá exemplo (for example, such as) ou conclui (overall, in short)? Se você sabe qual é a relação, escolhe na tabela certa.
Pega um e-mail ou um texto seu em inglês e troca três "and" e dois "but" por conectivos desta lista. Lê em voz alta. A diferença entre inglês básico e inglês que soa bem, muitas vezes, é só uma palavra de ligação no lugar certo.
