Você está numa conversa em inglês, entendendo tudo, e de repente alguém diz que o projeto "custou um braço e uma perna" ou que a colega "deixou o gato sair da bolsa". Você traduz palavra por palavra e nada faz sentido. Sorri, balança a cabeça e torce pra ninguém perguntar sua opinião. Isso é expressão idiomática: frases cujo sentido não está nas palavras.
Olha, elas assustam, mas são finitas e muito repetidas. Nativos usam as mesmas cinquenta ou sessenta o tempo todo. Neste post eu trago 50, organizadas por tema, com o significado real e uma frase de exemplo cada. Você não precisa decorar todas hoje; precisa começar a reconhecer. Bora lá?
Facilidade, dificuldade e esforço

"I need to sleep on it before I sign anything." Preciso pensar até amanhã antes de assinar qualquer coisa.
Dica: "call it a day" é a expressão perfeita pra encerrar uma reunião ou um dia de trabalho. Soa natural e simpática.

Expressão idiomática não é decoração. É o jeito que a pessoa fala quando está à vontade. Entender essas frases é entrar na conversa de verdade.

"Before we start, let's make sure everyone is on the same page." Antes de começar, vamos garantir que todo mundo está alinhado.
Dica: "you can say that again" é uma das formas mais naturais de concordar com entusiasmo. Substitui aquele "yes, yes" que a gente repete sem graça.

Como usar sem soar forçada
Tenho alunas que aprendem dez expressões e tentam encaixar todas na mesma conversa. Não funciona. Nativo usa uma ou duas por conversa, no momento certo. A regra é: usa só a que você já entende bem e que combina com o que você sente.
Começa pelas mais comuns e mais seguras: "a piece of cake", "take it easy", "hang in there", "in a nutshell", "time flies". Elas cabem em quase qualquer conversa e ninguém estranha.
"Take it easy, you're doing great." Vai com calma, você está indo muito bem.
Dica: ouvir é mais importante que falar aqui. Quando pegar uma expressão numa série ou num vídeo, anota a frase inteira, não só a expressão. O contexto é o que ensina.
O que fica dessa lição
Expressão idiomática não se traduz, se reconhece. As 50 desta lista cobrem a maior parte do que você vai ouvir em conversa, série e trabalho. Você não precisa produzir todas; precisa parar de travar quando escuta.
Escolhe cinco que te fizeram sorrir e usa uma por dia esta semana, em voz alta, numa frase sua. A gente aprende errando, e uma expressão usada no lugar errado ainda é melhor do que uma expressão nunca usada.
