Você conhece o verbo "get". Conhece "up", "on", "off", "over". Mas aí alguém diz "get over it", "get on with it", "get up early" e cada combinação vira uma palavra nova que você não reconhece.
Phrasal verb é um verbo mais uma partícula (up, off, on, out, over, back) que juntos ganham um sentido novo. "Look" é olhar; "look after" é cuidar; "look for" é procurar; "look up" é pesquisar.
"I'm looking for my keys." Estou procurando minhas chaves.
"Could you look after my bag for a minute?"

"Do you get along with your roommate?"
Dica: "hang up" é desligar o telefone, "hang out" é sair com amigos, "hang on" é esperar um instante.
Aprendizado e trabalho

Movimento e mudança
| Phrasal verb | Tradução | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| go on | continuar, acontecer | What's going on here? |
| go out | sair (de casa, pra se divertir) | We're going out tonight. |
| come back | voltar | When are you coming back? |
| come in | entrar | Come in! The door is open. |
| get in / get out | entrar / sair (carro, táxi) | Get in the car. We're late. |
| get on / get off | subir / descer (ônibus, trem, avião) | Get off at the next stop. |
| run out of | ficar sem, acabar | We ran out of milk. |
| turn around | virar, dar meia-volta | Turn around and look! |
| move on | seguir em frente | It's time to move on. |
| end up | acabar (em algum lugar ou situação) | We ended up at a small café. |
"I need to get off at the next station." Preciso descer na próxima estação.
"We ran out of time, so we ended up taking a taxi."
Repara que carro e táxi usam "get in / get out", mas ônibus, trem e avião usam "get on / get off". A lógica é: o que você entra e senta baixinho é "in"; o que você sobe e fica de pé é "on".
Compras, planos e problemas
| Phrasal verb | Tradução | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| try on | experimentar (roupa) | Can I try on these jeans? |
| check in | fazer check-in | We checked in at the hotel at noon. |
| check out | fazer checkout; dar uma olhada | Check out this new restaurant! |
| throw away | jogar fora | Don't throw away the receipt. |
| put off | adiar | I keep putting off the dentist. |
| cut down on | reduzir | I'm cutting down on sugar. |
| look for | procurar | I'm looking for a gift for my mom. |
| look forward to | estar ansiosa por, esperar com alegria | I'm looking forward to the trip. |
| calm down | acalmar-se | Calm down. Everything is fine. |
| come up with | ter (uma ideia), inventar | She came up with a great plan. |
"I'm really looking forward to seeing you." Estou muito ansiosa pra te ver.
"Stop putting it off. Do it today." Para de adiar. Faz hoje.
Dica: depois de "look forward to", o verbo vai com "-ing": "looking forward to seeing you", nunca "to see you".
Uma dúvida que aparece sempre: "turn on the light" ou "turn the light on"? As duas estão certas. Mas se o objeto for um pronome (it, them, him), ele vai obrigatoriamente no meio:
"Turn it on." Liga isso.
"Pick them up at five."
Já os que têm preposição no fim (look for, look after, get along with, run out of) nunca separam: "I'm looking for it", nunca "looking it for".
