Você conta da viagem e tudo é "good": the hotel was good, the food was good, the people were good. Você quer dizer que o passeio foi incrível, que a vista era de tirar o fôlego, que a comida era maravilhosa, mas só sai "very good". Tenho alunas com gramática ótima que sentem que o inglês delas é "sem cor", e o motivo é esse.
A boa notícia é que não precisa aprender mil palavras. Precisa trocar as dez mais repetidas por duas ou três alternativas cada. Isso já transforma o jeito como você soa. Neste post você vai ver os sinônimos pras palavras que todo mundo usa demais, com exemplos, e a regra pra escolher o certo. Bora lá?
Good
Good é a palavra mais gasta do inglês. As alternativas mudam o grau de intensidade:

Dica: great é o substituto mais natural de good na fala do dia a dia. Se só for trocar por uma, troca por great.
Bad

Big e small

"The airport is huge, but the gate was tiny." O aeroporto é enorme, mas o portão era minúsculo.
Repara que large é o big mais formal: "large size", "large coffee". Huge e enormous são pra exagero.
Falar bem não é usar palavra difícil. É ter a palavra certa pra intensidade certa.
Happy e sad

Beautiful e ugly

Dica: stunning e gorgeous são os dois que mais impressionam numa conversa. Usa quando quiser mostrar que gostou muito mesmo.
Very
Esse é o segredo que ninguém conta: muitas vezes, em vez de trocar o adjetivo, você troca o "very". Ou tira ele e usa um adjetivo forte que já tem o "muito" dentro.

E os adjetivos que já vêm com "very" embutido, e por isso não aceitam "very" na frente:

"I was starving after the hike, and the water was freezing." Eu estava morrendo de fome depois da trilha, e a água estava congelante.
"I'm exhausted. It was an extremely long day." Estou exausta. Foi um dia extremamente longo.
Repara que "very exhausted" e "very freezing" soam errado, porque a palavra já é o máximo. Se quiser reforçar, usa "absolutely" ou "completely": absolutely exhausted, completely freezing.
Say, think e like
Os verbos também se repetem, e as alternativas deixam a fala mais precisa:

"I figured you'd be tired, so I mentioned it to the hotel." Imaginei que você estaria cansada, então comentei com o hotel.
Dica: "I guess" e "I figure" são os "eu acho" mais naturais do inglês americano falado. Trocar "I think" por eles de vez em quando já muda a impressão que você passa.
O padrão por trás de tudo
Repara que os sinônimos se organizam em graus: good, great, amazing. Bad, terrible, awful. Big, huge, enormous. Você não precisa de todos, precisa de um leve, um médio e um forte pra cada palavra que repete. E quando o adjetivo já é forte, o "very" sai da frente.
Escolhe as três palavras que você mais repete (a maioria escolhe good, very e bad) e adota um substituto pra cada uma esta semana. Usa até sair sem pensar. Seu inglês não precisa de mais palavras. Precisa das certas nos lugares certos.
